Gel Manicure Aftercare: What to Do in the First 24 Hours

October 05, 2026•2 min read

Quick answer: Gel is fully cured when you leave the salon, but for the first 24 hours avoid long hot showers, hot tubs, dishwashing and harsh cleaners. After that, wear gloves for chores, use cuticle oil daily and never pick at the edges.

The first 24 hours

  • Skip very hot water. Heat can soften the seal at the edges before it fully settles.
  • Hold off on lotion with heavy oils right on the nail. Apply hand cream around the nail, not on top.
  • Avoid sunscreen sprays and cleaning products. Some chemicals dull the shine.
  • Don't test it. Tapping or scratching to "check" the gel can lift the edges.

Every day after

  1. Rub cuticle oil into the skin around each nail at night.
  2. Wear rubber gloves for dishes and cleaning.
  3. Use your fingertip pads, not your nails, to open cans and peel labels.
  4. Keep a clear top coat at home? Skip it. Regular top coat over gel can make it look cloudy.

If something lifts

A lifted corner traps water and grows. Don't glue it or peel it. Call or text us and come in for a fix or a fresh gel polish change.

How long should gel last?

With good care, about 2 to 3 weeks. If yours peels in under a week, tell your nail tech. Oily nail beds, very soft nails or heavy hand-washing can all shorten wear, and there are prep steps that help.

Common questions

Can I shower after a gel manicure?

Yes. A normal shower is fine. Just avoid very long, hot showers, baths and hot tubs for the first 24 hours.

Can I put regular polish over gel?

You can, but it's not recommended. It can dull the gel, and remover used later may affect the gel's shine.

Why did my gel lift after a week?

Common reasons are oily nail beds, water exposure, picking, or product touching the skin. Tell your nail tech so they can adjust your prep next time.
